Shelter Volunteers

Dear Bayit Community,

We are excited to let you know that we are able to restart our Tuesday night respite shelter after an almost 30 month pause due to Covid.  As a reminder here is how the program works:

Homeless individuals seeking help are able to get services in New York City by first going to a drop in center. At a drop in center, individuals are able to receive social, health and medical services. The sole drop in center in the Bronx is called the Living Room/Safe Haven.

The Living Room, operated by Bronx Works (http://bronxworks.org/), has a list of available beds on any given night. They fill those beds with individuals in their care who are not exhibiting any negative behavior from alcohol, drugs, or mental illness and are demonstrating good personal hygiene. In addition, BronxWorks provides transportation to and from the Living Room/Safe Haven as well as clean linens for each night that we operate. The guests our shelter hosts come to us from the Living Room by transport, have dinner and go to sleep, and are transported back to BronxWorks the next morning with breakfast to go.

You can get involved!

Volunteers are always welcome Tuesday evening to set up beds, serve the meal, clean up after the meal and provide camaraderie to our guests. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Shelter@TheBayit.org.

Overnight volunteers are also needed to spend the night at The Bayit ensuring that our guests do not need any special attention. If you are interested in volunteering in this capacity you can sign up using the form below.

If you have any questions about volunteering or contributing to the shelter please email Shelter@TheBayit.org.
