Janet R. Kirchheimer’s father was arrested on Kristallnacht. On the night of November 9th, 1938, he hid along with his mother, father, older sister, and younger brother in the basement of their home. The next morning, he was ordered to report to Town Hall, arrested, and sent to Dachau.
Janet will discuss Kristallnacht and its legacy, read poems from her book about her father, How to Spot One of Us, show a short portion of her film, AFTER: Poetry Destroys Silence, and will answer questions.
Janet R. Kirchheimer is the author of How To Spot One Of Us, a collection of poems about the Shoah and her family, praised by Elie Wiesel, Sir Martin Gilbert, and Rabbis Harold Kushner and Irving “Yitz” Greenberg. A Pushcart Prize nominee, her work has appeared in numerous journals, and her essays on Holocaust memory have been featured in The New York Jewish Week and The Wisdom Daily. She produced the acclaimed documentary AFTER: Poetry Destroys Silence (screened at the Bayit in 2025), exploring how contemporary poets confront the Shoah, named one of the best films of 2024 by RogerEbert.com.
Dedicated by Charles Salomon and family in memory of his beloved wife, Dr. Joan Long Salomon z”l, a member of our congregation, who dedicated herself and her gifts to Holocaust research, both here and abroad, writing, speaking, and creating memorialization, while building bridges for future generations.
