Rabbi Aaron Leibowitz is the founder of 'Hashgacha Pratit', an organization that broke the monopoly of the Israeli Chief Rabbinate on kosher Supervision, and now runs Chuppot. He is a former city council member who believes in an inclusive and pluralistic Jerusalem. Rabbi Leibowitz leads the Vaani Teffilah community in the Nachlaot neighborhood of Jerusalem, where he lives with his wife Miriam and their five children. He is a master teacher, a gifted storyteller, and a serial social troublemaker.

  • Marriage and State, an Unholy Union? 

Rav Aaron will speak on his bid to break the monopoly of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel over marriage. This issue is at the core of many contentious issues of religion and state in Israel including conversion and divorce. Chuppot is the first organization to openly enable any Jewish couple in Israel who wish to do so, to marry in a halachically orthodox ceremony outside the framework of the Rabbinate.

In this session, Rav Aaron will address the phenomenon of the growing number of Jews who commit themselves to halacha (Jewish law) but do not turn to rabbinic authorities in their decision-making. Rav Aaron will discuss both the halachic and sociological issues surrounding this practice as it relates to orthodox Judaism.
