Introductory remarks by Rabbi Steven Exler

Rabbi Dr. Shuki Friedman, head of Religion and State department at Ne'emanei Torah Va'Avoda, is a professor of law at the Peres Academic Center in Rehovot, and teaches at Bar Ilan University. He earned an LL.B. and B.A. in economics and Middle East studies and an LL.M. and Ph.D. in Islamic and constitutional law from Bar Ilan University.

Before joining the Peres Center, Dr. Friedman served for eight years in the legal division of the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, where he oversaw international and foreign law activities. During that time he also taught Jewish and Islamic law at Bar Ilan University. From 2011 to 2013 he was head of the Israeli government’s committee on sanctions against Iran.

Previously, he was a research fellow in Israel Democracy Institute, where he focused in the relation between state and religion in Israel.

Dr. Friedman has written numerous articles and book chapters, many on the role of Jewish law in Israeli law and public policy.  He was ordained as a rabbi by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and admitted to the Israeli bar.
