Kristallnacht Memorial Service & Book Talk with Joan Gluckauf Haahr Ph.D: “Being a German Jew: Before, During, and After Kristallnacht”

Curious since childhood to know what exactly happened to her family of German Jews, many of whom died as Nazi victims, Dr. Haahr undertook research which culminated (more than 20 years later) in her book "Prisoners of Memory: A Jewish family from Nazi Germany."

In her talk today -- based on her findings and using evidence from slides, letters, and other evidence both written and oral -- Dr. Haahr hopes to convey some of what it meant to be Jewish in Germany prior to 1933 and throughout the 1930s with special focus on their experiences during November 1938.

The child of German Jewish refugees, Joan Gluckauf Haahr was born and grew up in New York City’s Washington Heights, a place of refuge for many German Jews. After receiving her Ph.D. in English Literature from Harvard, she taught for over forty years at Yeshiva University, where she also served as long-time chair of the Yeshiva College English Department. She has lived for many years in North Riverdale, where she and her husband raised their three children.
