Closing Message - Rav Steven View video version here.
In the middle of a long conversation with (monologue to!) Moshe, God suddenly addresses him in the second person three times in five verses in the beginning of this week's parashah, Tetzaveh:
You! Charge the children of Israel... (Ex. 27:20) You! Bring near to you... (Ex. 28:1) You! Speak to the wisehearted... (Ex. 28:3)
Why does God speak to Moshe in this way?
The entire previous parashah has involved God asking Moshe to do "more than usual" - not just to hear and transmit commandments and lead the people, but to oversee a major construction project. And there's more ahead, including assigning key roles to others, moving Moshe out of the spotlight.
I wonder if God pauses now in the conversation to affirm the special relationship God has with Moshe - to remind Moshe how much he matters, how uniquely suited he is to do this work, and how much his "Moshe-ness" enables the fulfillment of God's commands and vision.
For the last year we have leaned on others in new and different ways. Perhaps we've become accustomed to asking others to shop for us, check in, or support us in other ways.
What a difference it makes to pause occasionally as God does and tell them not just thank you, but here's why *you* are so specially equipped to help me in these ways: why I trust you uniquely, how you make me feel comfortable to ask for help, how you support me so thoughtfully.
May we seize those opportunities this week. Thank *you*. No one does it like *you*.
Reminder to all to take good care of ourselves and each other. Try to do something specific today that strengthens you, and something else that strengthens someone else.
