Consider Becoming a Bayit Shopping Buddy or Caller
Shopping Buddies: We want to continue to discourage "extra" errand running and continue to provide shopping buddies, especially to our immediate neighbors. You can be paired up with someone in your building or geographic proximity.
Callers: We want to continue to check-in on those in our community who have been isolated at home for such a long time and continue to offer an opportunity for callers to connect with other members in the community and reduce loneliness. We need more volunteers! If you can help, or want to learn more, please email shiragordon25@gmail.com.
Closing Message - Rabbanit Bracha View video version here. The festival of Chanukah is not mentioned in the Torah (because it happened afterwards), but there are two sections in the Book of Numbers that are tightly bound to Chanukah.
The first section is about the Chanukat HaMishkan - the dedication of the Tabernacle and the dedication-offerings brought by the princes of the tribes. These are the verses that we read every day on Chanukah. The very next section is God’s instruction to Aharon the High Priest to light the Menorah in the Mishkan.
Midrash Rabbah brings a beautiful teaching to explain the proximity of these two sections: Aharon was disheartened that his whole tribe - the tribe of Levi - did not participate in the dedication offerings. God consoled him: “Fear not! You are designated for something of even greater importance. The offerings will cease when the Mishkan is no longer in existence but the lamps of the Menorah will give light forever!”
Ramban - Nachmanides - is mystified by this Midrash. Once the Mishkan and the Temples were no more, the Menorah disappeared as well! How then would the lamps of the Menorah give light forever? Ramban comes to the conclusion that the Sages of the Midrash must be alluding to the lights of Chanukat HaChashmona’im - the Rededication of the Temple by the Hasmoneans - which we now celebrate as Chanukah!
This Midrash teaches us that when we light our Chanukiyot, we are rekindling the lights of the Menorah that were lit daily in the Mishkan and the Holy Temples.
Chag Urim Same’ach!
Reminder to all to take good care of ourselves and each other. Try to do something specific today that strengthens you, and something else that strengthens someone else.
