Revival: Recovering My Family's History, Discovering The Forgotten Jews of Mainz

Joan Long Salomon is the daughter of a Holocaust survivor and the niece and granddaughter of Holocaust victims. She will speak about the life of her family and what it was like for them and the rest of the Jewish community of Mainz to live under Nazi rule, reviving with us the lost history of that Jewish community. Her talk opens with narratives from Kristallnacht and takes us forward to how her research has built bridges of dialogue and relationship with German residents of her hometown today.
Her presentation is punctuated by historic documents including letters written by her grandmother in Nazi Germany to her mother in America. Joan is a member of Generations Forward Speakers Bureau, a group of second and third generation individuals sponsored by the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center in White Plains, New York. She has a Ph.D. from Columbia University and devotes her life entirely to Holocaust research, writing, speaking and memorialization work.
